And finally…Chapelton joins Aberdeenshire’s geocaching craze

Chapelton is the latest town to join Aberdeenshire’s geocaching craze with the high-tech treasure hunt being added to the town’s first park.

Liddell Park, named after Scottish Olympic gold medallist Eric Liddell, is home to the outdoor pursuit – a fun pastime of finding a small, hidden container using a device equipped with GPS mapping such as a smartphone or tablet.

Participants, known as Geocachers, including local residents and visitors, can use coordinates on their device to hide and seek a waterproof container, which normally contains a logbook to record their discovery, as well as a small reward. Once the geocache has been discovered, players hide the container for future players to discover.

Alastair Struthers, a resident from Chapelton and keen Geocacher, said: “Geocaching is a great family activity involving walking, problem solving and mystery, getting all ages out and about to explore the Aberdeenshire scenery.

“The pursuit has really taken off across the country and it’s great to see so many locations involved across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire such as Duthie Park, Hazlehead Park and now Liddell Park in Chapelton.”

The newly opened Liddell Park is the latest addition to Chapelton which is located five miles south of Aberdeen. The park, which is proving popular with children and staff from nearby Croft Nursery school, offers a place for children to play and adults to relax, whilst forming part of Chapelton’s many green spaces.
