Budding businesses invited to ‘Invest in Peterhead’ and breathe new life into vacant properties

A partnership led by Rediscover Peterhead Business Improvement District (BID) and Aberdeenshire Council is working with partners to find creative uses for vacant commercial spaces in the town centre.

The partnership has developed a strategy, Invest in Peterhead, to market Peterhead town centre to investors and developers with an aim of creating a vibrant and diverse town centre.

The strategy, which is supported by the work of the regional inward investment hub, Invest Aberdeen, has been in development over the past year.

It will look at finding creative uses for empty space, both on a temporary and permanent basis, to nurture Peterhead’s next generation of entrepreneurs and business owners. As part of this, an event open to anyone looking for premises in Peterhead will be held on Wednesday, 29 May at 5:30pm at the BID office 28 Marischal Street.

New businesses have already started to choose Peterhead for investment and enterprise, such as BrewDog in Marischal Street, Carriages in Chapel Street, a new seafood restaurant in Broad Street, and a local vinyl music pop-up shop making great use of a vacant shop on Chapel Street.

Chair of Rediscover Peterhead John Pascoe said: “Invest in Peterhead is something we have been working on since April last year and it is coming to fruition now with a strategy and official launch this summer.

“We have two components of the initiative underway already and it has been well supported by the invited interested parties. The initiative aims to market investment opportunities to both local independents and to a wider UK audience.”

Cllr Norman Smith, Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Buchan Area Committee, added: “A lot has been and is continuing to happen in Peterhead. Over the last two years there has been significant investment and growth in the outskirts of Peterhead.

“Throughout 2017 – 2018, £305million has been invested into projects such as Peterhead Port Authority, who completed a major investment project of over £50million in 2018 to cater for the growing fishing market and opportunities arising from renewable energy and decommissioning projects.

“We have welcomed the world’s first offshore floating wind farm, Equinor and Masdar’s Hywind Pilot Park, along with the Hywind STEM Hub at Peterhead Academy, and NorthConnect, a project providing an electricity transmission link under the North Sea between Boddam and Simadalen, Norway has been given the green light. Alongside these projects, developing our town centres will help to create a vibrant local economy.”
