  • Survey works for Galashiels Academy

A series of survey works are to be undertaken this summer in preparation for the new Galashiels Community Campus.

A number of hand trial digs will be undertaken today around the existing swimming pool and associated car park as well as localised areas within Scott Park.

Throughout the summer, there will be a number of further surveys undertaken on the site including a drainage survey of the existing culvert to the rear of the site and a root survey of key protected trees.

The findings of all surveys will help inform the final design and ensure the long term protection and preservation of the area.

A community consultation on plans for a new Community Campus in Galashiels is available to view online.

The online consultation provides the opportunity for the wider community to view detailed plans for the Campus and provide their views on the outlined plans.

  • Shetland archaeologist opposes house near historic broch

Proposals to create a four-bedroom house on the site of a derelict building near Shetland’s historic Clickimin Broch have been opposed by an archaeologist.

Dr Val Turner, Shetland’s regional archaeologist, told the council that the location “is totally inappropriate for a house and could end up at public inquiry should you consent it”.

She added: “In such circumstances I don’t see how I could act on behalf of the planning department in an inquiry if the issue was that you had not taken my advice.”

Historic Environment Scotland, which looks after the broch, has also objected to the plans, Shetland News reports.
