Civil and structural engineering practice Civic Engineers has reported a strong year of growth and announced the appointment of a new finance director.

The company, which has offices in Manchester, London, Leeds and most recently Glasgow, has seen turnover grow by 33% to £4.5 million in the financial year ended February 2018.

In addition, former Deloitte accountant Alistair Topping has been revealed as its new finance director.

Civic Engineers established a permanent Scottish base last year with the acquisition of the Glasgow arm of consulting engineers Structa LLP in August.

It then followed this by securing a £1.8 million contract to help deliver Glasgow City Council’s ‘Avenues’ project in November.

An experienced finance director, Alistair previously spent 13 years at Deloitte advising owner managed businesses throughout the North West. Most recently he was group finance director for a business providing energy efficiency measures which was grown and successfully sold to a trade purchaser in 2017.

Founding director Julian Broster said: “This last year has been a very busy one for us and it is great to be able to announce these results and welcome Alistair to the team. Over the course of the year we have worked on some fantastic projects with our many clients and collaborators, including Rutland Mills in Wakefield; Park Hill in Sheffield; Cannon Green in the City of London and the conversion of the listed Mackie Mayor building in Manchester city centre. In particular, we were proud to open our Glasgow studio which has allowed us to establish a permanent Scottish home; secure a place in the NCE Top 100 for the first time, which recognises the Top 100 civil engineering companies, and win the contract to design and deliver the transformative Glasgow ‘Avenues’ project which will see us redesign 7 of Glasgow’s key city centre streets.”

He added: “Alistair’s appointment is an important step in the growth of our practice and he brings an essential balance of financial and commercial skills to our Board. We have had a couple of years of strong growth and we now seek to consolidate that growth and focus on our aim of designing and creating inspirational structures and public spaces, that have a positive impact on the environment and enable people to lead happier and healthier lives.”
