The centre previously unveiled its intention to refit its ground floor into a custom-built hub which will be used for a range of events such as talks and workshops. It is being designed to be more accommodating for people with disabilities.

A tender notice has been published for the contract for an architect-led team that will provide services including principal designer, mechanical, electrical and plumbing services engineering, structural engineering, quantity surveying.

The job will see the entrance foyer, coffee shop seating area, auditorium and exhibition areas transformed. The aim is to keep the centre open while the work is ongoing.

The work is due to be complete by March 2021.

In 2018, the centre launched its new first-floor facilities, which include the new Medical Marvels exhibition and a science learning suite.
