Michael Laird Architects unveils designs for bespoke Ravelston Quarry homes

Ravelston_Quarry-Villa-2Plans for a trio of bespoke detached villas overlooking Ravelston Quarry in Edinburgh have been unveiled by Michael Laird Architects.

Nestled in to the centre of the disused old quarry near Ravelston House, the practice collaborated with Rankin Fraser to create three separately designed, high spec, bespoke villa houses for AMA (New Town) Ltd.

In their design statement the architects said: “The proposed villas are arranged in a linear North-south direction, loosely parallel to the cliff face and angled to maximise natural light and south west aspect.

“The space between the cliff and new line of development form a linear entrance courtyard. This is a dramatic and unique space dominated by the stone quarry face and enhanced by the stone facades of the villas.

“The building forms are asymmetrically raked and reference the geometry of the cliff face and the undulating site topography. Large glazed living spaces with adjacent covered parking and entrances spaces are tucked under the principal mass of the building form.

“The end villa to the north hover’s its living space over the pond. Finished in zinc, this property is expressed as a lightweight structure in contrast to the heavier stone structures of the villa’s that are immediately adjacent to the cliff.”

Each property will stretch to 300sq/m, occupying a largely secluded spot toward the centre of the site.
