Bearsden Community Hub reaches financial close

Bearsden Community HubPlans for a brand new Community Hub in Bearsden took a significant step forward this week as the partners involved in the £3 million project achieved financial close.

The landmark agreement was reached between East Dunbartonshire Council, development partner hub West Scotland and contractor CCG.

Construction work is expected to begin on April 4 and is set to run for completion in early 2017.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “The development of the Community Hub is exciting news for Bearsden and will see major investment in the town centre. The new Community Hub will provide everyone in Bearsden with a state-of-the-art facility they will be proud of.

“The network of community hubs continues to be a key aspect of the council’s transformation programme to continue to deliver customer services locally throughout East Dunbartonshire. They are at the heart of supporting town centre regeneration as well as delivering efficiencies and savings in our wider operating model.”

The new Community Hub, which is based on a reconfiguration of the Burgh Hall site on Drymen Road, will include the re-provisioning of the library and community archives from Brookwood as well as enhancing the current hall facilities through a full refurbishment.

The new facility, which will bring together a range of council, library, leisure and cultural services under one roof, will also contain new public meeting rooms and social work facilities, new public toilets as well as an entire upgrade of the current accommodation.

A customer services area will deliver a new, ‘one stop shop’ approach to customer services to make it easier for residents to access and get information about a variety of different council services and make payments for them in just one visit.

CCG will be on site from Monday 4 April when the existing car park will close until the completion of the work.

Debbie McNamara, chief executive at hub West Scotland, said: “We are delighted to be delivering East Dunbartonshire Council’s Community Hub in Bearsden, which is due to start on site in April. This will be the third community hub we have delivered in partnership following the recently opened Lennoxtown Community Hub, and the first hub in William Patrick Library in Kirkintilloch.

“Reaching our seventh project with the Council is an exciting milestone for the partnership.”

The first Hub facility was opened at the William Patrick Library building in Kirkintilloch in August 2012 and has been a huge success with increased visitor numbers since its introduction.
