  • Five housebuilders now on-site at Winchburgh

The second phase of housebuilding at Winchburgh is now fully underway as Winchburgh Developments Ltd welcomes CALA, Barratt Homes and J Smart & Co to its’ new joint marketing suite alongside Robertson Homes and Bellway.

Across the development, the five housebuilers are working in partnership to deliver 407 quality new homes, which will range from one-bedroom canal-side apartments to six-bedroom family properties.

John Hamilton, CEO, Winchburgh Developments Limited, said: “We’ve reached an exciting point in the development here at Winchburgh. Work on the first phase of Auldcathie District Park is set to commence shortly following the completion of land remediation. We’re also progressing rapidly with delivery of both the new marina on the Union Canal and on the new schools’ campus. I believe the range of homes now available, combined with the exceptional lifestyle on offer is absolutely unrivalled at the moment in Scotland.”

CALA’s new development, which is named Oakbank, will offer a collection of 74 four and five-bedroom family homes, surrounded by mature woodland and close to the new town centre and canal marina, as well as Auldcathie District Park.

95 three and four-bedroom homes, including 20 affordable homes, are being launched by Barratt Homes at its Caisteal Gardens development. Located to the north of Winchburgh, Caisteal Gardens is close to Auldcathie District Park and the new schools’ campus.

J. Smart & Co’s two developments include a Canal Quarter comprising of 50 one, two and three-bed apartments and 14 three-bed houses overlooking the new marina, as well as releasing four bespoke five bedroom architect-designed family homes at The Courtyard, opposite the new schools’ campus.

Robertson Homes are to release 53 new four, five and six-bed luxury homes located close to the town centre while Bellway Homes has 117 new three, four and five-bedroom homes (of which almost half are already reserved or occupied), located next to Auldcathie District Park and the schools’ campus. Bellway was one of the first housebuilders to commit to the development and has been creating family homes on site for the past five years. This latest phase has proved to be exceptionally popular amongst buyers keen to be part of such a thriving new community.

  • Town centre funding projects agreed for 3 Easter Ross communities

Highland councillors have approved three projects that will be offered a total £140,260 Scottish Government Town Centre funding to help deliver economic stimulus in Evanton, Invergordon and Tain.

Projects need to have started by the end of March and grant spent by the end of September.

Councillors agreed that the following three successful projects will be offered Town Centre Funds:

Rose Garden, Tain – £70,130 to Tain Task Force and The Highland Council for new surfacing of the Rose Garden paths and refurbishment of the public toilets.

Shore Road, Invergordon - £50,000 to The Highland Council to provide a traffic and passenger management system for visiting cruise ships.

Evanton street lighting - £20,130 to The Highland Council to install new architectural lighting columns at the southern entrance of Evanton to improve the amenity, welcome and arrival of the village.

  • Safer walking, cycling and wheeling set for Edinburgh’s Lanark Road

Work on measures to significantly improve cycle safety on Lanark Road, Longstone Road and Inglis Green Road as part of Edinburgh’s Spaces for People programme will begin next week.

Following feedback from the community, the City of Edinburgh Council has made several amendments to the scheme, which will include a segregated cycle lane on both sides of the road and speed limit reductions.

Along with pop-up cycle lanes on Slateford Road and Dundee Street/Fountainbridge, interventions will help relieve congestion on the Union Canal towpath and Water of Leith walkway. These shared use paths have seen a substantial increase in pedestrians and cyclists during lockdown with at least a 150% rise in cyclists during the summer. This alternative route will help reduce conflict and allow for physical distancing, particularly on narrower sections like the Slateford Aqueduct.

Since sharing the original proposals with stakeholders we’ve made changes to the designs in response to comments from local people, largely to maximise parking access for businesses and any residents who don’t have driveways.

  • Traditional heritage skills and training opportunities – Inverkeithing Heritage Regeneration

Fife Historic Buildings Trust (FHBT) is holding an open virtual breakfast meeting, on 28th January 2021 to launch the traditional training and skills development opportunities the 5-year project will offer to the construction sector.

Fife has a higher concentration of listed buildings than any other local authority area in Scotland. The traditional skills training provided free through the Inverkeithing Heritage Regeneration project will allow individuals, construction industry firms and building professionals - architects and surveyors - to develop or hone their tradition building skills. Help us to protect Fife’s world class heritage for generations to come, by appropriate and timely maintenance.

At the meeting, FHBT staff will outline future construction opportunities coming up through the project, and advise on accessing the funded training in traditional skills. Fife Council’s Employability team will advise on the mechanics of taking on a traditional skills apprentice. There will be time for questions and networking.

  • Summer short-term letting application for Stirling student flats goes to appeal

Owners of a student accommodation development in Stirling have appealed to the Scottish Government to allow the flats to be used as short-term holiday lets during the summer months.

UK PBSA (Forthside Way Stirling) Ltd submitted a planning application to Stirling Council seeking a variation of a condition of the original planning permission for the 209-bed building which restricted the development for student use only.

In October, councillors rejected the application by six votes to two on the basis it would impact the area, particularly in terms of parking and the potential increased turnaround of people using the accommodation.

But the developers have now registered an appeal with the Scottish Government’s DPEA (Planning and Environment Appeal’s Division) alleging the panel’s reason for refusal was “not appropriate” and should be overturned.
