Dundee Institute of Architects launch sketch design competition

Seabraes compA competition has been launched by the Dundee Institute of Architects (DIA) for the public to submit ideas on how a site within the city’s Seabraes Yards could be used for children and young people.

Renowned for its expertise in digital media and creative industries, the former railway goods yard provides a dedicated space to build on these successes by becoming a hub for the digital media and cultural industries, incorporating both commercial and residential space.

The site is within walking distance of the University of Dundee, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee Contemporary Arts and the University of Abertay Dundee.

District 10, an incubator building, constructed from shipping containers, was constructed to support start up creative industry companies and completed at Seabraes Yards in 2014. A new railway footbridge was completed at Seabraes in 2016 connecting the regeneration area to Dundee’s riverside.

Held over the month of November, the sketch design competition is one of more than 400 events taking place across Scotland during 2016 as part of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) organised Festival of Architecture, and a key part of the Scottish Government’s 2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design celebrations.

Proposals, on two A3 panels in PDF format, are invited for ‘Site One’ within Seabraes Yards, Dundee. Site One is adjacent to the railway and is visible from Riverside Drive on Dundee’s Waterfront. Please see the dimensioned plan for more details.

The space and/or building can be open or closed to the elements. It could be a park, sport, activity or user group space. The proposal should celebrate, support and enhance our young people’s health & wellbeing, imagination, and learning with fun and play providing the core for your idea.

Entrants will be judged by a panel selected by Dundee Institute of Architects.
