South Lanarkshire community centre set for £1m investment

The library will be fully accessible to everyone on ground level and will offer access to the latest books and newspapers in both traditional paper format and electronically.

A full community led programme of activities for children and adults will be on offer, along with a new and exciting digital support programme which will offer the community access to Wi-Fi, the internet and the opportunity to see the latest 3D technology.

The project, funded by South Lanarkshire Council with a £300,000 contribution from Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, is an innovative solution to develop a public asset.

It will support economic growth and facilitate joint working and allow development of integrated flexible training, learning and community facilities which will support economic and social regeneration.

The community hall and library refurbishment is a key priority in the Our Place Our Plan Neighbourhood Plan which, by bringing all community planning partners and the local community together, has set out residents priorities in the Springhall and Whitlawburn area over the next 10 years.

Executive director of community and enterprise resources, Michael McGlynn, said: “We are delighted that work will soon be getting underway on this exciting community project. What is being delivered has had full input from local people and we are providing a modern, accessible and fantastic new space for everyone to enjoy for many years to come.”

The renovation work is being carried out by South Lanarkshire Council Housing and Technical Resources.

Site start is scheduled for 24 May which allows the hall to remain open for the European Election. The refurbishment is expected to take around a year to complete.
