169 Scottish jobs lost as National Timber Group collapses

The UK’s largest independent timber distribution and processing group, National Timber Group, has entered administration, resulting in the immediate closure of six Scottish sites and the loss of 169 jobs across the country.

The Sheffield-headquartered company, which operates well-known brands including Rembrand, Scotia Roofing, and Orchard Timber Products, employs around 1,200 people across the UK. On Wednesday, administrators Alvarez & Marsal confirmed that 561 roles nationwide had been made redundant as part of the restructuring.

Of the 13 outlets closed in recent days, six are in Scotland, including Dumbarton, Forfar, Newton Stewart, Stirling, Hawkhill in Edinburgh and Anniesland in Glasgow.

The company had 25 locations in Scotland, with other bases in Aberdeen, Inverness, Ayr, and Skye. While some facilities remain operational, certain production sites have been mothballed.

Joint administrator Michael Magnay said: “Regrettably, the company’s liquidity challenges have led to a number of immediate redundancies.

“We are committed to supporting the affected employees through the redundancy process. We appreciate the support and patience of the highly skilled workforce in difficult circumstances, particularly at this time of year”

National Timber Group, with a combined turnover of £350 million, has faced difficult trading conditions and liquidity challenges for some time, according to CEO Mark Dixon. He confirmed last week that the company was in “advanced discussions” with an interested party regarding the sale of a substantial part of the business.
