£5.2m Lennoxtown Hub project reaches financial close

Plans for a brand new Community Hub in Lennoxtown took a significant step forward this week as the partners involved in the £5.2 million project achieved financial close.

The landmark agreement was reached between East Dunbartonshire Council, development partner hub West Scotland and contractor Morgan Sindall.

Designed by Anderson Bell Christie, the building will contain three levels, being two storeys high fronting Main Street in the heart of the village. The lower ground floor will contain an entrance foyer and employee facilities with level access to the parking area to the rear of the building.

The ground floor will have a main entrance on to Main Street and will contain the front desk, library and office. The first floor will contain office space, meeting rooms and health care use including GP surgeries.

Demolition works to the existing buildings on the site on Main Street was completed in December 2014. Construction work is expected to begin in February and is set to run for completion in January 2016.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “The development of the new facility will see major investment by the Council within Lennoxtown and is a key element of our commitment to supporting development within the area.

“Community Hubs are an important element of the council’s long term vision for effective, efficient, customer focussed services in East Dunbartonshire. Bringing together a wide range of council services under one roof in an exciting and innovative way will help us deliver services more efficiently to our residents and improve their experience of dealing with the council.”

The new facility, which will contain a public library, council services, offices, community spaces and NHS facilities, is being built as part of the council’s wider regeneration of Lennoxtown, which has been identified as one of the local authority’s targeted regeneration areas.

Debbie McNamara, chief executive at hub West Scotland, said: “We are delighted to be working with East Dunbartonshire Council on another exciting project, which will deliver significant improvements in the facilities available to the Lennoxtown community. This will be our fourth project with the council to commence construction and we look forward to delivering community benefits to local residents over the next 12 months.”

The network of community hubs, including Lennoxtown, is a key aspect of the council’s programme to continue to deliver customer services locally throughout East Dunbartonshire. The first Hub facility was opened at the William Patrick Library building in Kirkintilloch in August 2012 and has been a huge success with increased visitor numbers since its introduction.
