£7m Govan Interchange upgrade deal for Graham

new_9748722__govan-subway-550x336Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) has awarded a £7 million contract for the modernisation of Govan Subway and bus station in Glasgow to Graham Construction as part of their ongoing £288m Subway Modernisation programme.

Govan, which services around one million passengers a year, will be the seventh Subway station to be modernised providing a new look station with glass covered walkways connecting to the adjacent bus station and new passenger lifts on each circle between concourse and platform level.

It is hoped the work will improve access in and out of Glasgow city centre and to the new South Glasgow Hospitals complex.

Other improvements to be delivered at Govan will include a new modern ticket office, new flooring, wall and ceiling finishes, signage and enhancements including hearing loops, tactile maps, tactile paving and colour contrast flooring.

As the construction work involves both Subway and bus improvements, a modern entrance with glazed bi-parting doors will be installed on Golspie Street to assist with easier passenger flow and a quicker connection to the Fastlink bus services nearby.

New doors will provide an enhanced entrance area to the concourse on Govan Road and glass canopies will cover both entrances.

Perimeter fencing and CCTV will increase passenger safety.

The Interchange refurbishment is due for completion by the end of 2016.
