The John Lewis building on Aberdeen’s George Street has been denied listed status because of proposals to redevelop the Bon Accord centre.

Historic Environment Scotland said the surviving two principal elevations of the former Norco House building “meet the criteria of special architectural or historic interest”.

Its report said: “Our assessment of Norco House found that the special architectural interest of the building is confined to the surviving two ribbed concrete and glazed elevations which form a striking Brutalist design.

“The interior of the building is not of special architectural or historic interest because of the level of later alteration, including the removal of significant parts of the original building.”

However, it said that the proposed redevelopment of the Bon Accord shopping centre could introduce a glazed canopy over George Street which could “affect the character of the elevations”.

The redevelopment proposals in principle were conditionally approved in August 2017 but have not moved forward since then.

Despite this, heritage officials concluded that the development proposals “are at an advanced stage and we have therefore decided not to proceed with listing the building”.
