The B999/Shielhill Road junction in Aberdeen is undergoing improvement works this week.

Improvements on the junction itself, removing the tight bend on the B999, and widening verges on Shielhill Road form part of the planned works.

The main contractor is Hunter Construction, and the site preparation works begin on 15 October.

Councillor Ian Yuill, Aberdeen City Council co-leader, said: “The new layout will make a positive difference for drivers using the route and those living in the local area.”

Councillor Christian Allard, Aberdeen City Council co-leader, said: “The design will provide substantial road safety benefits while also retaining junction capacity.”

Road safety and visibility at the junction will be improved as part of the works and traffic capacity at the junction for road users will be maintained.

The planned work includes:

  • Realignment of over 300 metres of the B999 to remove the tight bend immediately north of the junction by bringing in a relaxed curve to the east of the current B999
  • Reconfiguration of the B999/Shielhill Road junction
  • A culvert extension on the east of the existing culvert at the Burn of Mundurno to accommodate the realigned carriageway
  • Widened verges on the B999 to enhance visibility

The wider work includes the removal of the dry stone wall on the northern side of Shielhill Road over the extents of the double bend.

The widening of the verge on the northern side of Shielhill Road over the extent of the double bend is also planned.

The regrading of slopes within the field on the northern side of Shielhill Road over the extent of the double bend will also form part of the work.
