Access road complete as Dunvegan masterplan takes shape

Access road complete as Dunvegan masterplan takes shape

A new school will be at the heart of the masterplan

The first phase of a masterplan development in Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye is now in place following the completion of a new access road.

A place-based masterplan was developed by The Highland Council in partnership with Lochalsh & Skye Housing Association and comprised a new build primary school, the development of adjacent land for housing, a site for a new community sports pitch, and an upgraded access road serving the entire development.

Construction work on the access road started in January 2025 and was carried out by the council’s in-house roads team at a cost of approximately £2.6 million.

The design for the new school building continues to be developed with a planning application having been submitted to address the few remaining matters relating to the school element in the approved masterplan, and the building is programmed for completion by the end of 2027.

The council is also moving to enter a pre-construction agreement with Morgan Sindall following its recent appointment as the preferred contractor for the new Broadford Primary School building, which is based on the same Passivhaus design principles and will deliver high quality, suitable, sustainable, low carbon, and digitally enabled learning environments.

Morgan Sindall will work with the project team as they finalise the design and will submit a tender sum based on this to deliver the project.

Education Committee and Skye & Raasay chair, Cllr John Finlayson, said: “It is good to see the new access road now completed as the first phase of this ambitious masterplan for the Dunvegan community.

“Progressing the pre-construction agreement with Morgan Sindall is very welcome news following their recent appointment to take forward the Broadford project, and it is anticipated that this approach could deliver cost benefits and economies of scale by delivering two major school projects in tandem on Skye.

“This is an exciting time for both the Dunvegan and Broadford communities and it is good to see continuing progress on both projects.”
