And finally…. 40-acre park to open on man-made Chicago island

A 40-acre park on the southern portion of Northerly Island in Chicago is set to open tomorrow.

Northerly Island is a 91-acre (370,000 m2) man-made peninsula along the city’s lakefront.

Visitors will be able to see the island that boasts a five-acre lagoon, as well as a bike and pedestrian trail, according to the Chicago Tribune. It also features over 150 different kinds of plants.

The $9.7 million park was created by landscape architects SmithGroupJJR and Studio Gang Architects, in collaboration with the Chicago Park District.

The new park takes up almost half of the 91-acre Northerly Island, the Tribune reported.

The park is located on what used to be an airstrip called Meigs Field, which was infamously bulldozed late at night by former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.
