The Chang’an Academy Xi’an Public Library has been completed in Xi’an, China, featuring a large-scale white roof shaped like the pages of an open book.

 The 70-square-meter public library is situated in the Changba Ecological District, on the banks of the Ba River and near the Olympic Sports Center, Pragmatika reports. 

The project was developed by Chinese architectural studios Hong Designworks alongside the China Northwest Architectural Design and Research Institute. 

The team were faced with the task of merging the role of a big public building and urban landmark with the need to form an accessible and comfortable area for day-to-day use. 

To decrease the visual extent of the complex, it was divided into three areas. Between them, is a central plaza and a long opening running through the building, which allows internal daylight. 

The library’s roof is located lower in the central part, and rises towards the corners, forming a distinct silhouette over the glass facades.

The roof resembles the shape of pages in an open book and reflects upon traditional architecture in China. 

The interiors include wood-effect metal panels that satisfy fire safety requirements. Stone floors and ceilings clad in white triangular panels are also featured.
