And finally…building site delivery arrives with sting in the tail

Work at a Dublin construction site was temporarily brought to a halt this week after a hitchhiking scorpion scuttled out of a batch of building supplies.

The alarm was raised when the unexpected visitor crawled out of a delivery of kitchen sinks – believed to have arrived at the Baggot Street site from Turkey.

Workers immediately notified the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals – and officers called in experts to identify the creature.

Only a handful of Scorpion species are deadly - but many can deliver a nasty sting.

The society is looking for a suitable home for the intrepid arachnid – nicknamed JP by staff.

Gillian Bird of the DSPCA said that it was unusual to get the call from the building site.

She said the ISPCA was still trying to identify the small scorpion of just under 4cm in length which gave the team on site “quite a shock.”
