And finally… Death of the bank holiday for building professionals

Architects, engineers and builders are the joint second hardest working professions in the UK when it comes to bank holidays as almost nine in ten will be working today, according to new research.

Those in HR (89 per cent) are the most likely to be working this weekend, followed architects, engineers builders (87 per cent) and healthcare professionals (86 per cent).

New research has found evidence that the traditional bank holiday for Glasgow SMEs is obsolete with 94 per cent of business owners admitting that they will be working today Monday.

Over half (51 per cent) of small to medium business owners polled in the city also said public holidays are irrelevant to modern business needs.

A poll of 500 SME owners and decision makers by LDF, the independent finance provider to SME businesses, has revealed that of those working on Monday, over a third of Glasgow businesses (36 per cent) will be doing so in order to deal with urgent email traffic, while a quarter (25 per cent) will be addressing their workload, which they simply do not have time to deal with during normal working hours.

The research also found that just under a third (29 per cent) of SME owners and decision makers in the city take 10 or less days of holiday each year.

With two thirds (65 per cent) admitting that they regularly work outside of traditional working hours, the findings are amongst the highest in Britain, and have highlighted the true strain SME owners are under in Glasgow.

Nearly a fifth (19 per cent) admitted that work concerns keep them up at night and 3am was cited as the peak “worry hour”, with one in ten of small business owners wide awake contemplating work related issues at this time.

LDF managing director, Peter Alderson, said: “It’s clear that Glasgow’s business owners are working long hours and they need access to finance outside of the standard nine to five access of traditional banking. For most of these businesses, bank holiday Monday is just another working day.”

“We have introduced the 24 hour a day lendinghive platform to help alleviate these stresses, providing on-demand support and results in minutes.”

Tom Oswald from Sneaky Acts, a real time information app, added: “We regularly work bank holiday weekends. I don’t believe there is such a thing as a day off for SMEs, particularly when you are attempting to rival companies like Youtube and Instagram as we are.”

The UK’s top ten cities working this bank holiday are:

  1. Brighton (95 per cent)
  2. Cardiff (94 per cent)
  3. Glasgow (94 per cent)

  4. Edinburgh (93 per cent)
  5. Manchester (85 per cent)
  6. Norwich (81 per cent)
  7. Southampton (81 per cent)

  8. Sheffield (80 per cent)
  9. London (79 per cent)
  10. Plymouth (75 per cent)
