And finally… Edinburgh’s ‘Ribbon Hotel’ plan named in list of flops for looking like a ‘turd’

Jestico + Whiles Edinburgh 2Edinburgh’s new £850 million ‘Ribbon Hotel’ plan has been ridiculed as one of Scotland’s biggest flops.

The List Magazine slammed the swirling design at the centre of proposals for the St James Quarter in its run-down of the year’s five worst people, places or things.

The “Not 100” list - a counterpoint to the magazine’s famous “Hot 100” checklist of Scotland’s biggest and best cultural figures - said: “We’re not here to knock Jestico + Whiles’ plan for the new hotel which will feature prominently in Edinburgh’s plan to replace the St James Centre.

“After all, architecture depends on taste and perspective, like any art. But did nobody look at the gold swirl which is intended to make its outer edge look like an uncoiled printer ribbon and think ‘doesn’t that look like something else?’

“Lo, the ‘turd hotel’ was born, and Edinburgh World Heritage status is at risk.”
