Whitelocks, in Leeds, had intended to offer pints of a popular 1970s beer, which had been recently relaunched, at 1970s prices.

However, local licensing officials told the pub’s owners that its promotional offer would be “irresponsible” and a breach of its licence.

Fortunately, the pub sought advice from a lawyer who said there was nothing to stop it giving away the pints for free, the BBC reports.

For four days, Whitelocks offered a free pint of the 3.8% ale as, they said, a reward for their customers’ loyalty.

Under English law, pubs cannot sell alcohol for less than the cost of duty plus VAT.
