And finally… great Dane

A patriotic attempt to brighten up a Hereford roundabout went awry when a local accidentally painted the St George’s Cross with inverted colours, leaving the junction looking more Danish than English.
The blunder near Newton Farm is part of a wider wave of unofficial flag painting across England, where masked men have been spotted daubing St George’s crosses on roundabouts and crossings.
While some praised the displays as harmless national pride, others dismissed them as vandalism, pointing out that taxpayers will foot the clean-up bill.
The DIY patriotism has been linked to Operation Raise the Colours, a social media campaign encouraging public flag displays. Councils and police, however, have warned against the trend, citing safety concerns. Birmingham City Council has already pledged to remove flags hung from lampposts, calling them a hazard.
Local leaders stress that pride in national identity must be balanced with safety and inclusivity.
Walsall Council leader Mike Bird told The Metro: “We recognise people’s intentions, but street alterations can pose real risks. We’ll keep working with communities to find safer ways to celebrate.”
