And finally… history on the rocks

And finally... history on the rocks

Restoration work is being carried out around the striking pyramid cairn erected by Queen Victoria in memory of Prince Albert on the Balmoral Estate in Aberdeenshire.

Known as Prince Albert’s Pyramid, the granite monument was completed in 1862 and remains the largest of several cairns on the royal estate. It bears the inscription: “To the beloved memory of Albert, the great and good Prince Consort, erected by his broken-hearted widow Victoria, 21st August 1862.”

The Balmoral Estate said the ground surrounding the cairn has become “severely eroded” due to increasing visitor numbers, leaving the structure at risk.

A major repair and restoration project is now underway to stabilise the site and restore the surrounding landscape.

A spokesperson for Balmoral Estate said: “This work will restore the landscape around the cairn and stabilise the structure of the pyramid for future generations to enjoy.”

Visitors are being asked to follow guidance and any instructions from staff while the work takes place.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that this essential repair work creates,” the estate added.
