And finally… Local hedgehogs supported by Bellway

Midlothian Hedgehog Rescue and Rehabilitation has received sponsorship from Bellway Homes to fund a new incubator for orphaned hoglets.

The organisation delivers a rescue and rehabilitation service serving the Lothians and Edinburgh and was established as a result of the increasing number of injured, orphaned, and malnourished hedgehogs.

British hedgehog numbers have dropped significantly, with population estimates indicating drops of more than 50% in rural areas and roughly 30% in urban
Settings. Loss of habitation and fragmentation associated with modern development are key contributing factors, leaving hedgehogs susceptible to injury, illness, and starvation.

June is the epitome of the mating season and when hoglets are born, which means that hedgehogs and babies are at increasing risk.

Lynn Pringle, sales director, Bellway Homes Ltd (Scotland East), said: “It’s alarming to hear the impact the hedgehog population is suffering at the moment and the work the charity is undertaking locally is so important.”

“We’re delighted to provide some support that hopefully will see the hoglets transition into healthy hedgehogs.”

Bellway Homes, based in Livingston, has active developments across the Lothians including Dalmore Grange, Auchendinny; Prince’s Gate Blindwells; Elfenne
Gardens, Elphinstone; Shawfair; Earl’s Way, Glenrothes; and Winchburgh Grange, Winchburgh.
