And finally… Robert De Niro wins approval for Covent Garden hotel

American actor Robert De Niro has been granted planning permission to open a hotel in London’s Covent Garden.

The boutique Wellington Hotel has been given the go-ahead by Westminster City Council.

The hotel will fill six adjacent buildings and plans call for a spa, restaurant, private members’ club and retail space.

Goodfellas actor De Niro, 73, already owns the luxury Greenwich Hotel in downtown Manhattan.

The five-star hotel in the Big Apple attracts an A-List clientele.

De Niro told The Caterer that the hotel would “honour the heritage of the area, while bringing the best of what we’ve done in New York to London.”

De Niro is also in the midst of developing a high-end resort on the sleepy island of Barbuda, with billionaire James Packer.

But not all of De Niro’s real estate plans are blockbusters. Last December, Nobu Hotel Manila was voted worst luxury hotel of the year by Luxury Travel Intelligence, a members-only, high-end travel rating company.
