And finally… Rock solid

And finally. . . Rock solid

Plans have been approved for a house designed to look like rocks on a famous Yorkshire moor.

The house, which has large irregular-shaped windows and a natural outdoor pool, is visually similar to the landmark Cow and Calf Rocks in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, the BBC reports.

The structure will be built on green belt land and will be eco-friendly.

According to Harrogate-based architects Shaw & Jagger, the project was eventually passed by HM Planning Inspectorate through the country house clause, which permits development on green belt for buildings of “exceptional quality”.

The house will be made using gritstone from local quarries and will contain four bedrooms, The Independent reports.

The landowner David Rasche commissioned the architect Matt Masserella-Gill to design the home.

The structure has been called Fomorian, which in Irish mythology means a supernatural race of giants - drawing inspiration from the mythical giant Rombald who is said to have lived on Ilkley Moor.

The application was originally submitted to planners of Bradford Council.

The application was rejected on the basis of non-determination, which means a decision was not issued within the necessary timeframe.

Ilkley Town Council objected to the plans, recommending the plans be refused, arguing it is a “visual anomaly to the moorland”.

It was also noted by Ilkley Town Council that the proposed project was close to the Swastika Stone, a prehistoric rock carving which is one of Ilkley Moor’s hundreds of Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

But Bradford Council’s decision was appealed, and was passed by the Planning Inspectorate back in August.
