And finally… ‘Sunglass’ trial to cool temperatures on Edinburgh trams

St-Andrew-Square_TramEdinburgh Trams is trialling window filters on one of its trams to help control on board temperatures.

The tram has been fitted with an ultraviolet-resistant film as a result of passenger feedback on tram temperatures.

The film is currently being assessed but is already proving popular with staff.

Interim tram director and general manager Ian Craig said: “We know this can be an issue on exceptionally warm days and temperatures inside the tram can be 8C higher than outside. This summer hasn’t been as warm as last year obviously but it’s something we wanted to address.

“We’ve installed heat sensors in the tram with the UV film, and the early signs are that it is making a difference - and the staff like it. We need to assess the data more but we’re hopeful that this approach can make a positive impact on our service.”

The company are also looking at other ways to regulate temperatures including installing more opening windows.
