And finally… Video: Giant sinkhole in Japan repaired in two days

A giant 30-metre sinkhole that opened up in the Japanese city of Fukuaka was repaired within 48 hours.

Following undergoing emergency repair work to the 15 metre deep hole that included repairs to sewage pipes, utility poles and traffic management systems, the hole was filled within two days.

Support columns of nearby buildings were exposed sparking fears that the structures could fall. Local gas, electricity, phone lines and water supplies also had to be restored.

Work on extending a local subway station line is thought to be reason for the sinkhole’s appearance.

According to the Guardian, the hole was filled with 6,200 cubic metres of sand and cement.

The road was reopened a week later after city officials carried out safety checks, with an inquiry set to be launched to discover the full story behind the sinkhole.
