While the work is being conducted, the bridge and access to Cot House service station will stay open under traffic management. 

Cot House Bridge incorporates specialist half-joint detailing, which necessitates a particular focus during inspection and repair. The extent to which repair work is needed will be determined once the deck has been seen and inspected.

The work will be conducted one lane at a time. The current road surface will be removed to show the bridge’s concrete deck for the purpose of inspection and any required repairs. 

Afterwards, the repaired deck will be waterproofed and resurfaced ahead of the lane reopening and work progressing to the opposite lane. 

Additionally, defects underneath the bridge will be shown and repaired on the soffit and elevations.

The date of completion of the work will be determined by the extent and complexity of any repairs identified once the concrete is seen, alongside the state of the weather. 

The works are being funded via the Local Maintenance Bridge Fund secured by Argyll and Bute Council’s Infrastructure Design Team, forming part of a wider investment programme to strengthen four bridges and replace another four bridges in Argyll and Bute.

Councillor John Armour, policy lead for Roads, Transport and Amenity Services, said: “The Council is responsible for around 900 bridges across Argyll and Bute. 

“Some are more than 100 years old and were not designed for today’s volume and weight of traffic.”

Armour added: “Even more modern bridges are affected by the west of Scotland climate and need regular care. 

“Thank you for your patience while we carry out this vital work to keep Cot House bridge in service for many years to come.”
