  • GRAHAM promotes construction careers to S2 pupils

Around 150 13 and 14 year olds taking part in a career carousel event in St Augustine’s RC High School received supported from GRAHAM Construction as part of its work to deliver Broomhouse Community Centre and Meadowbank Sports Centre.

The S2 pupils heard from GRAHAM health and safety supervisor, Derek Rose, and quantity surveyor, Craig Meechan – both working on the Broomhouse Community Centre project, who promoted the many different career pathways into the construction industry.

The teenagers heard from employers who shared information and advice about careers, job roles and their sectors.

Organised by Heather Lovatt, DYW co-ordinator for St Augustine’s RC High School, the event was attended by seven employers from a diverse cross-section of industries.

Once complete, Broomhouse Community Centre will be a purpose-built 735sqm hub complete with its own cinema and café, hair and beauty salon, shop, artist studio and enterprise desk area – each arranged around a main hall.

The hub will provide a wide range of services and activities, including working with older people, young carers, a befriending scheme for young people, a cafe open every day and an events catering arm.

Suzanne Stevenson, compliance manager at GRAHAM, said: “It is never too early to learn about the many different routes into the construction industry – which is an extremely broad sector with lots of job opportunities, regardless of interest.

“Events like these are really important to GRAHAM, giving us the opportunity to speak directly to the next generation of construction recruits while sharing an insight into the excellent work which is taking place at Broomhouse Community Centre - a hub will provide essential resources for the Broomhouse region, for many years to come.”

  • Skye glamping development approved

Highland councillors have approved plans for a 27-pod glamp site with restaurant, whisky bar, outdoor plunge pool and sauna on Struan Road in the outskirts of Portree.

The development is by London estate agents Garton Jones.

Owner Charlie Garton-Jones and his wife Miranda have also transformed The Cowshed hostel in Uig into a boutique bunkhouse with luxury pods.

The new development will be laid out in the natural contours of the landscape.

The luxury pods will be the equivalent of en-suite bedrooms, placed in four clusters around the upper part of the site.

Lower down is the hub, containing restaurant and bar, and the sauna and pool building.

The complex is contemporary in design, featuring curved walls, natural stone, lots of glass and a ‘living’ turf roof.
