  • CALA makes PPE donation

CALA Homes (West) has donated to a small business in Glasgow which is raising money to purchase vital PPE for key workers in the NHS.

Building Briefs – May 12th

The homebuilder has donated £500 to Jordanhill-based cupcake company, Cake at Number 8, which is passing on all profit to Kelvinside Academy to allow it to produce face shields for hospitals across Scotland, using the school’s readily available equipment.

The donation from CALA Homes (West) has seen 180 face shields made by Kelvinside Academy – as well as dozens of sweet treats – sent to the ICU and COVID-19 wards at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Liana Canavan, sales and marketing director at CALA Homes (West), said: “In this unprecedented time, we wanted to be able to do what we can to help. When we first noticed the selfless work Lindsay at Cake at Number 8 was doing alongside Kelvinside Academy, we knew we wanted to get involved immediately.

“It is a small token of gratitude to the fantastic frontline NHS workers at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, all of whom are working tirelessly in the fight against the spread of COVID-19. We know the face shields will go to good use, and hope the cupcakes put a smile on their faces.”

  • Pandemic puts plans for Royal Dornoch clubhouse into the long grass

Plans for a multi-million-pound new clubhouse for the world-renowned Royal Dornoch Golf Club could be delayed for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The club lodged proposals last year for a twin-gabled building to replace the original built in 1909 and had hoped to go out to tender soon to start construction.

However lockdown measures, which have closed courses and facilities across the country, means further work on the development has been postponed.

It is estimated building work may not start now before October 2022 – if funds are available.

The plans envisage creating a building centred on a feature staircase linking two arched entrances to the west and north. Architects Keppie Design has also added a clock tower on the corner between the 1st tee and 18th green.

  • Affordable homes planned by Wester Ross community development organisation
Building Briefs – May 12th

A Wester Ross community development organisation has unveiled plans to purchase land to create affordable homes and business units.

The Applecross Community Company (ACC) is currently in the final stages of submitting an application to the Scottish Land Fund as it seeks to transform areas in the village to provide shelter for residents and to encourage others to move there.

Applecross is a small, rural community of 225 residents. Most of the land on the Applecross Peninsula is owned by the Applecross Trust, and there is now an opportunity to acquire land for community housing.

The Trust has granted its support to the community housing project, with an informal consultation in the community identifying 30 people who have said they would be interested in either renting or purchasing a property should the opportunity arise.

Three sites in question are Front of hydro field, Clachan and Smiddy Wood.
