Cassiltoun pushes ahead with £5.7m plans to deliver 42 new affordable homes

The first phase of Cassiltoun Housing Association’s ambitious development plans will achieve a site start this month.

The Association will complete 42 new homes on three sites known as ‘Barlia 3’. The development will consist of a mixture of general needs, wheelchair adaptable and amenity elderly housing.

The project is being part funded by Glasgow City Council (£3.6 million) with private finance provided by CAF Bank and the Association contributing towards the total scheme costs.

Anna Stuart MBE, chair of Cassiltoun Housing Association, said: “Achieving this milestone is fantastic after many months of planning, I hope the lucky tenants who take up occupancy enjoy their new homes once we complete the building constructions stage. I would like to thank Glasgow City Council for their support delivering this project and for the significant grant award of £3.6m to make it possible.



“The quality of homes and the design is to be a very high standard which will assist many people meet their housing needs and save money on fuel costs in these energy efficient homes.”

Councillor Kenny McLean, city convener for neighbourhoods, housing and public realm, said: “This will be a fantastic development for Castlemilk, and once again we are seeing the building of high-quality homes that have low running costs and meet the needs of a wide variety of people in the city. I am particularly pleased as this is another development taking place on sites that have been vacant for a long time and now are being brought back to life to meet the housing needs of local people.”

Charlie Millar, chief executive officer of Cassiltoun Housing Association, added: “This is the start of phase one of our ambitions housing development plans. We are currently busy preparing for phase two by delivering another 60 affordable homes for rent on sites we own at Castlemilk Drive. It is our intention to create as much movement in our stock to maximise meeting the housing needs of the local community including waiting list and homeless applicants. We anticipate phase two starting in December 2019 or January 2020.”

Cruden Building has been appointed to construct the development, while the design team is led by MAST Architects.

All of the units will be eco-friendly, ensuring all residents benefit from warmer dwellings that have fewer carbon emissions and are more economical to run. As with all our developments, we will work closely with Cassiltoun and local companies to deliver Employment and Training opportunities to people within the Castlemilk area.”

Michael Jarvis, director of MAST Architects, added: “It’s exciting to see regeneration taking place throughout Castlemilk whilst working with our new client. The development will enhance the local area while at the same time provide modern day living facilities for the local residents. It’s a fantastic project to be involved in as we feel passionate about improving the quality of life for as many people as we can.”
