CIOB Scotland launches wellbeing events to help tackle construction industry stress

After recent CIOB research revealed nearly one in four construction professionals have experienced daily stress over the past year, CIOB Scotland is taking action, writes Deborah Burns, member services and events co-ordinator for Scotland.

We’ve planned a series of engaging events designed to support wellbeing across the sector. These events are about more than networking – they’re about creating spaces where people can connect, relax, and feel part of a supportive professional community.

The need for this kind of support is clear. Our latest report, Understanding Mental Health in the Built Environment 2025, revealed 28% of workers surveyed had experienced suicidal thoughts in the past year, and 20% reported daily fatigue - most likely due to long hours and deadline pressures.

Encouragingly, support structures are improving, with over half (54%) of respondents now having access to a mental health first aider at work, up from 35% in 2020, and more than three-quarters (77%) having been encouraged to participate in awareness initiatives like Mental Health Awareness Week.

However, the report also highlights ongoing gaps - nearly one in five workers (17%) said they don’t feel confident approaching a colleague they believe might be struggling. That’s why creating inclusive, relaxed, and mentally healthy environments is so vital – and our upcoming events aim to do exactly that.

From behind-the-scenes site tours to light-hearted socials and our flagship Awards ceremony, the rest of the year’s line-up offers something for everyone. Each event is designed to boost morale, reduce stress, and strengthen relationships within the built environment community - especially important in an industry where stigma around mental health still exists.

First up is an exclusive site visit to one of Scotland’s most significant construction projects: HMP Glasgow, the landmark replacement for the 143-year-old HMP Barlinnie. Taking place on Friday 15 August, this free event offers a rare opportunity to witness the development of a facility that will play a pivotal role in the future of Scotland’s justice system. Safety boots are required, but other essential PPE will be provided.

The CIOB in Scotland Awards & Gala Lunch, taking place on 10 October at Doubletree By Hilton Glasgow Central, is the jewel in our crown when it comes to events.

More than just a celebration of professional excellence, the awards night is a powerful reminder of the value of recognition, community, and pride in our industry. Being part of an event which highlights the achievements of peers can significantly boost morale, and the uplifting atmosphere, shared successes, and sense of belonging all contribute to a positive experience that lasts well beyond the event itself.

Our team of esteemed judges are currently in the process of deciding which award entries have made the final cut, and we’re excited to be able to share more details on that soon. Tickets are still available and can be purchased here.

Finally, on 31 October, we’re inviting graduates and early-career professionals to join us for Graduate Ghouls & Grim Tales: A CIOB Halloween Special. This first-of-its-kind event for CIOB Scotland offers a thrilling evening of networking and immersive storytelling at The Edinburgh Dungeon. Beyond the fun, the aim is serious: to help young professionals build connections and feel less isolated in what can often be a high-pressure industry.

In summary, in an industry where high-pressure environments and long hours are common, the importance of community and connection cannot be overstated. CIOB Scotland is committed to creating spaces where professionals can share experiences, swap insights, and support one another’s mental wellbeing.

As Daisie Barnett, CIOB’s policy development manager and author of our recent report puts it: “While the vision of a mentally healthy construction industry might feel ambitious, it’s one we must work towards. Every step – from talking openly to showing up at a wellbeing event – matters.”
