Civic Engineers’ parent company has strengthened its presence in Scotland with the appointment of Becky McLean as sustainability director in Edinburgh
With projects including the Avenues and Custom House Quay in Glasgow and Edinburgh Innovation Hub, the senior hire reinforces Civic’s commitment to sustainable growth and innovation across the country.
Becky will lead the expansion of Civic’s environmental and sustainability services, applying a systems thinking approach to sustainability and deepening the team’s expertise in key areas such as biodiversity and water.
Becky has joined from Sweco, where she was head of sustainability, energy, water and environment. She is also a board trustee for the Green Action Trust.
With over 20 years’ experience in environmental consultancy across both public and private sectors, Becky brings an in-depth understanding of Scotland’s sustainability challenges and opportunities. Her expertise will complement Civic’s well-established strengths in built environment engineering, transport, heritage, archaeology, sustainability and place-based consultancy, supporting the company’s vision of having a positive impact on the environment and enable people to lead happier and healthier lives.
A key focus of Becky’s role will be to champion Civic’s strengths in caring for and protecting our climate and communities, and deepening sustainability offering for clients - while working closely with collaborators to drive new opportunities for growth.
“This is an amazing opportunity to grow and develop the Edinburgh studio, bringing together people who live, and work in the city, and who understand its distinct challenges,” said Becky.
“Civic has a real culture of system thinking, sustainability, and leaving a positive legacy. My goal is to champion that and introduce new services that enhance our impact.”
Her appointment marks an exciting phase of growth for Civic in Scotland, reinforcing the company’s dedication to technical excellence in sustainable and community-focused development. The team has nearly doubled its headcount across Scotland in the last year to 37, including the addition of Nikki Johnston as associate in the urban infrastructure team in Edinburgh, Lucie Killen as associate structural engineer in Glasgow, and Lindsay Reid as associate in the geoconsultancy team, Civic Earth, who are now established in Scotland.
New Practice, Civic’s team of community engagement and place-making experts, has also recently moved into the practice’s Glasgow studio at Virginia Street following acquisition in October’24. New Practice are embedding social value in place-based work across the UK and Ireland, and the move will allow the team to grow and expand their delivery of inclusive place-based projects.
Milestone projects for Civic in Scotland include: Edinburgh Innovation Hub, the nationally significant centre aiming to support business growth and enterprise; Baltic Street in Leith, a mixed-use development with student accommodation, affordable housing and shops, and a digital co-working space; Glasgow Avenues, where the team transformed the city centre streets by adding raingardens, cycle infrastructure and tree planting; Custom House Quay in Glasgow, providing civil and structural services, along with stakeholder engagement, ensuring that this area’s redevelopment enhances connectivity and public space along the River Clyde.
Stephen O’Malley, CEO and co-founder of Civic, commented: “We’re proud that our presence across Scotland has grown significantly in recent years, driven by our reputation for having a positive impact, combined with our values and culture.
“Becky is exceptionally skilled and collaborative, she’ll play an important role and use her expertise to help us to create better, more climate resilient and healthier towns, cities and places, for communities to thrive. It’s great to welcome her to the team as we strengthen our presence in Scotland.”
Alongside Civic’s studios at Virginia Street, Glasgow, and Lochrin Square, Edinburgh, the practice has studios in Manchester, London, Leeds and Dublin.
