Plans for a new hotel at Clydebank’s Queens Quay have taken a significant step forward after West Dunbartonshire Council approved a planning permission in principle (PPP) application.
About this development:
- Authority:West Dunbartonshire
- Type:Leisure
- Applications:
- Team:Montgomery Developers (developer), Environmental Design Scotland (agent)
Montgomery Developers, with Environmental Design Scotland as agent, is proposing a five‑storey Class 7 Clydebank Riverside Hotel on Ossian Way, adjacent to Clydebank Leisure Centre.
The project includes a café/restaurant, meeting rooms and a rooftop lounge, supported by limited parking, cycle storage and associated access and drainage works. The development forms part of the wider regeneration of the Queens Quay waterfront.
The application had previously stalled after the Coal Authority objected on land‑stability grounds due to the absence of a Coal Mining Risk Assessment. That objection was withdrawn earlier this year following submission of the required assessment, allowing the proposal to proceed.
Early design material for the project outlined an all‑electric, low‑carbon hotel featuring a ground‑floor river gallery, food and drink space and a rooftop venue overlooking the Clyde. The architectural approach draws on Clydebank’s shipbuilding heritage and the wider Queens Quay setting.
When the plans were first lodged, Environmental Design Scotland described the scheme as “an all‑electric, low‑carbon hotel with blue‑green infrastructure, bird‑friendly glazing and flood‑resilient public realm,” positioning it as part of a new hospitality destination for the waterfront.
Developers estimate the hotel could support between 80 and 100 full‑time jobs across front‑of‑house, housekeeping, food and beverage, kitchen, events, engineering and administrative roles.
John Gigli, project lead designer for the hotel, told SCN: “Environmental Design Scotland are pleased to confirm that the local authority granted planning consent for the proposed Clydebank hotel development. With approval now in place, the project can move forward.
“We are delighted to be able to progress the development and move on to the next stage. We believe the scheme will make a positive contribution to Clydebank’s riverside by bringing investment, creating new jobs, and delivering a high-quality design for this important site.”
