Construction college students prioritised for on-campus return

College students in the fields of construction and engineering are among those to be prioritised for a return to on-campus learning from next month, First Minister announced yesterday.

Unveiling the Scottish Government’s roadmap out of lockdown, Nicola Sturgeon said she expects that students will be allowed to return to on-campus learning from April 5 with practical subjects given priority.

Ms Sturgeon added: “Colleges will prioritise those students whose return is essential – including those who are most at risk of not completing their courses. That includes those who are taking qualifications in construction, engineering, hairdressing, beauty and related courses.”

Shona Struthers, chief executive of Colleges Scotland, said: “The First Minister’s announcement today is welcome news for colleges, who will be able to bring back up to 29% of students onto college campuses from April 5th – at the moment only 5% of students are learning on their college campus. Face-to-face learning is vital for practical subjects including construction, care, engineering and hairdressing.

“Colleges will of course continue to adhere to all the public health guidance in place to ensure that learning is safe. The increased numbers allowed from next month will allow us to better support our students and prioritise those who need access to workshops, labs and salons to complete the practical elements of their course this academic year.”
