Contract flooring trade body launches on-site heat campaign

A trade association has appealed to main contractors and builders to ensure optimal conditions for successful flooring projects.

The Contract Flooring Association (CFA) said the absence of adequate heating on-site, particularly in winter, can pose such problems that it impacts the quality of flooring installations.

To be blunt, without adequate heat on-site, floors will fail, the CFA said.

According to the trade body, flooring contractors often find themselves in situations where ambient temperatures on-site fall below the recommended range of 18 to 27 degrees Celsius. The implications of this extend beyond mere discomfort; it directly influences the performance of subfloors, adhesives, and various materials essential to the installation process. Resilient and textile sheet materials, in particular, become challenging to handle and cut without proper acclimatisation.

British Standards provide valuable guidance on maintaining correct temperatures for the installation of resilient, timber, and textile materials. The CFA’s 2022 Guide to Contract Flooring serves as a comprehensive resource (freely available at www.cfa.org.uk), addressing not only heat concerns but also emphasising the importance of lighting and effective coordination with other trades. Managing these factors collectively contributes to the overall success of flooring projects.

To assist in addressing the heating challenge, the CFA provides its members with valuable support materials for example a winter warning card. A practical on-site tool indicating temperature conditions, helping create awareness about the significance of suitable temperatures for flooring installations. The CFA also provides members with a poster that can be put on site noticeboards to help explain and remind people of the necessary requirements.

The “Winter Warning” site cards have proven instrumental when working with clients facing challenging temperature conditions. This collaborative effort aims not only to enhance the quality of flooring installations but also to foster a mutual understanding among clients, allowing CFA members to deliver superior services and value for money. These are all benefits of working with a quality supply chain that has been independently vetted.
