Councillors approve new £14.5m shared campus in Arbroath

Plans have been approved for a new £14.5 million shared campus for Hayshead and St Thomas RC primary schools and early years facility in Arbroath.

Angus Council’s development standards committee yesterday gave the go-ahead for the demolition of the existing primary school and the subsequent construction of the shared campus including Hayshead Primary School, St Thomas RC Primary School and early years facility.

Designed by Holmes Miller, the proposals include a 3,360 sq.m building with six interconnected single and two storey blocks, solar panels and two sports pitches as well as car parking and landscaping.

The main vehicular access to the site will be relocated to Hayshead Road and the proposed car park will accommodate 68 spaces, with six space drop-off zone, four motorcycle parking spaces and four disabled parking spaces. The existing parking spaces on St Abbs Road will also be retained. Pedestrian access will be retained at the St Abbs and Horologe Hill entrances.

Speaking after committee, children and learning convener, Councillor Derek Wann, said: “We are committed to investing in our schools, children and communities. This is a significant application that not only marks an important chapter in the Arbroath schools project, but also our ambitious for a school estate that provides all of our young people with the best possible start in life.

“A new bespoke, shared campus will provide our young people with an inspirational learning environment and I know it will be a facility that will serve the community both now and for generations to come.”

Construction of the shared campus is due to start in autumn 2018, with both schools expected to occupy the new building in February 2020.
