Councillors to consider 20-year regeneration masterplan for Grangemouth
A masterplan for the regeneration of Grangemouth over the next 20 years will be unveiled at a meeting of Falkirk Council’s Executive on 4 December.
Councillors will hear how the Grangemouth Spatial Vision and Town Centre Masterplan would provide a long-term framework for improving the town’s environment, economy and quality of life if approved.
A detailed report sets out a coordinated approach to development that could deliver new homes, improved public spaces, better transport links and greater community benefit from the town’s industrial strengths.
The report also recognises Grangemouth’s important role as one of Scotland’s main industrial areas, home to the country’s largest port, logistics operations and energy infrastructure.
The draft plan was initially developed using community feedback and input from partners including NHS Forth Valley, Police Scotland and the Scottish Futures Trust. It was then shared for public comment during August and September this year after councillors approved the approach in June.
The plan identifies a number of areas for improvement that could be delivered gradually over the next two decades, including:
- New housing and town centre living options to encourage more people to live locally
- Upgraded public spaces and streetscapes to make the town centre more attractive and accessible
- Better walking and cycling routes connecting neighbourhoods with shops, schools, parks and the waterfront
- Enhanced community, cultural and leisure facilities that encourage local use and attract visitors
- Investment in skills development, training and local jobs as part of an economic transition
- Improved connections between the town, port and industrial areas to support business growth
- Expansion of green spaces and improved flood resilience measures to protect homes and businesses
Michael McGuinness, head of growth, planning, sport and culture, said: “Grangemouth is entering a period of significant change. This plan looks ahead with a clear and balanced vision that builds on the town’s strengths while preparing for the future.
“It shows how industry, business and the community can work together to create a greener, more connected and resilient Grangemouth that continues to play a vital role in Scotland’s economy. We hope that elected members will respond favourably to our proposals at the meeting.”
The Spatial Vision links closely with other major initiatives already underway, including the Falkirk and Grangemouth Growth Deal, the Greener Grangemouth programme and the Forth Green Freeport.
