Dundee charity set for new build facility after Community Asset Transfer
Dundee practice ajfitchet | architect is to design and deliver a new day care and community facility for a local charity following the approval of a Community Asset Transfer application.
Since 2017, the firm has been supporting MidLin DayCare in its drive to develop a new build centre to enhance the exceptional service it delivers in the city.
A major milestone in the project was achieved as the Community Asset Transfer application of its current building on Pitkerro Drive was approved by Dundee City Council. By taking full ownership of the building from the local authority, it opens up funding avenues for what will be a multi-million-pound project for the charity.
ajfitchet | architect has developed plans which allow for the original building to be completely demolished and a new purpose-built facility constructed on the cleared site. The new facility will increase the floor area from 320m2 to 650m2, and include many more opportunities to invite the community into the building for a variety of uses, while maintaining and enhancing the daycare provision.
Included in the design will be an enclosed garden for the DayCare users to enjoy, dedicated activities and dining rooms, a Changing Places toilet, a lift, and flexible community spaces on the first floor. Solar panels will take advantage of the south facing roof aspect to reduce energy costs, while brick and metal cladding will create a clean, modern appearance, visually setting it apart from the existing white building on the site.
With the Community Asset Trust now approved, it gives the green light to formally submit the plans to Dundee City Council’s planning department for formal pre-application discussion prior to submitting a full planning application.
Alastair J. Fitchet from ajfitchet | architect said: “Early indications are, that ensuring the new building respects its surrounding context, there should be little resistance, however, this will only be determined once formal discussions take place and the final appearance is still subject to change. In any case, the final appearance will be a significant improvement and more welcoming than the current facility.
“We are excited to move the project on to this stage and continue to support MidLin DayCare with their ambitious plans.”
