East Kilbride set for 600 homes as major development approved in principle
South Lanarkshire Council’s planning committee has approved plans in principle for a large new housing development on the outskirts of East Kilbride.
The Langlands West development, located off Greenhills Road, would see up to 600 homes built across more than 42 hectares of agricultural land. Of these, 250 would be designated for affordable rent, with a further 200 available as private housing. A 150-unit retirement village is also included in the proposals, along with a neighbourhood centre offering retail, office and community facilities, and new green space.
The application was submitted by McTaggart Construction, Jackton Estates, and Link Group.
The approval was granted despite 30 objections from local residents and community groups. Concerns raised included traffic congestion, strain on existing infrastructure, the loss of agricultural land and greenspace, and potential effects on the nearby Langlands Moss Nature Reserve. Planning officers determined that the proposals complied with both national and local planning policy and recommended that approval be granted.
The site is identified for development within South Lanarkshire’s Local Development Plan and is part of the council’s growth strategy for East Kilbride.
The developers have outlined a range of environmental measures to accompany the build, including peatland restoration, the creation of a wetland park, new walking and cycling routes, sustainable drainage systems and biodiversity enhancements.
Approval is conditional on a legal agreement covering affordable housing provision and education contributions. Detailed designs for all elements of the development will be subject to further planning submissions before construction can begin.
