Edinburgh College’s construction department raised the roof as students who have proved they are built of the right stuff were celebrated at the college’s annual training awards.

Edinburgh College Institute of Construction and Building Crafts (ICBC) rewarded over fifty students from construction courses at their award ceremony at the college’s Granton Campus.

Student of the Year awards were given to the best first, second, third and pre-apprentice students in each curriculum area. Recognition awards were also given to students from across the curriculum for special achievements accomplished during their courses.

Construction students at Edinburgh College study a range of courses, including plumbing, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating, plastering, brickwork, roofing, stonemasonry, highways and road maintenance, and security. ICBC also offers a range of built environment courses in civil engineering, architectural technology, construction management and building services.

High quality training is delivered in purpose built workshops at the college’s Granton Campus and Forthside training centre. The department has strong industry links, and companies regularly send their apprentices to complete their training at the college.

John Laing, head of the Institute of Construction and Building Crafts, said “The awards are a fantastic opportunity for us to reflect not only on the academic excellence of our students, but also the dedication they have shown towards their studies. We are proud that so many manage to combine the demands of college with their responsibilities to work, family and the community.”

The awards were sponsored by industry bodies, local construction firms and suppliers, and the post-ceremony reception was sponsored by George Nicolson Decorators Ltd.
