And finally… Crane recovered six months after collapse

A 630ft crane which collapsed in Aberdeenshire six months ago has been recovered.

A team of 40 engineers began disassembling the vehicle at Dales Park Industrial Estate in Peterhead on Monday.

The £3m crane was being used to load equipment onto a low-loader before it fell on May 5.

Early attempts to uplift the Whyte Crane Hire vehicle were unsuccessful, forcing engineers to rethink their plan.

A spokeswoman for crane operators Aquatic said: “The five-day recovery operation commenced on Monday with the priority to ensure the operation is completed safely.

“Aquatic is working with police to restrict access to all but those engaged in the recovery, or working in and around the Dales Park Industrial Estate for the duration of the operation.

“A team of 40 people will be on site, together with four or five cranes needed to assist in the recovery.

“Aquatic is also liaising with other local businesses in the area, community safety groups and Aberdeenshire Council to ensure the local community is kept informed of the recovery.”

A Health and Safety Executive investigation into the incident is ongoing.
