A Cumbernauld-based staircase manufacturing company is stepping up its operation after receiving a five-figure investment from UK Steel Enterprise (UKSE).

Stockwell Limited, a producer of bespoke timber staircases, will use the funding to expand its production capabilities by increasing its permanent workforce by almost 90 per cent and investing in new equipment.

The company, which has been supplying Scotland’s housebuilders and homeowners for the past six years, specialises in creating and manufacturing complex and intricate staircase designs.

The investment provided by UKSE, the Tata Steel subsidiary set up to encourage regeneration in traditional steel producing areas, is expected to facilitate a substantial increase in Stockwell’s personnel. Over the next three years, Stockwell will add 11 permanent staff members, including two additional apprentices. The production of timber staircases requires a high level of joinery ability and Stockwell will use the capital provided to strengthen their commitment to training young people in this skillset.

Stockwell will also upgrade its workshop and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery. The state-of-the-art equipment will allow the company to meet the growing demand for increasingly complex stairway designs. For example, the machinery can produce beautifully crafted spiral hand railings, a product which has traditionally been difficult to manufacture.

Chris Stockwell, director at Stockwell Ltd, said: “Over the past few years, we have seen a growing demand from house owners who want to make their staircase a stand out feature of their home. In reaction to this, architects are coming up with increasingly complex and elaborate designs which require us, as manufacturers, to have the very best technology and a highly skilled workforce.

“The funding from UKSE will help us become better equipped to take on these difficult jobs and we could not be more grateful for the support. The team was on hand throughout, answering questions, providing advice and ensuring the process was a smooth as possible.”

Scott Webb, UKSE regional executive, said: “With the right tools, Stockwell will be able to keep up with emerging trends, ensuring that they are able to stay relevant in the ever competitive property markets. They are an ambitious company and we are confident that with this investment they will achieve great success.”
