Flats plan lodged for Baxter’s Mill in Dundee

Plans have been submitted to transform one of Dundee’s oldest jute mills into 24 modern flats.

Architects at Brunton Design are behind the proposals for Baxter’s Mill, the oldest mill at Lower Dens Works.

Built in 1828, the building at the corner of Constable Street and Dens Street was originally a flax warehouse and formed part of a complex which was the biggest linen mill in the world.

The building has since been used by a number of businesses, including Blackscroft Auto Centre, but has since fallen into a state of disrepair.

Brunton Design said: “The building is Category B-Listed so the application is the culmination of dialogue with the planning department and Historic Environment Scotland – all of whom were keen to see the building re-used and could not have been more helpful.

“When complete, the building will comprise 24 flats with an internal light well. The topmost floor will have large ‘loft style’ units with magnificent views over the River Tay and the city skyline.”

If approved, the development will be the latest in a line of reinventions at the Lower Dens Works.

The Hotel Indigo Dundee and Staybridge Suites serviced apartments opened inside a renovated building to the immediate west of the warehouse last year.
