Funding award approved to support new community hub in North East Fife

St Monan's Auld Kirk

Plans to transform St Monans Auld Kirk Enterprise (SMAKE) into a new community hub have progressed, with North East Fife Area Committee members approving a £20,000 funding award from the St Monans Common Good Fund.

The funding will help support vital repair and improvement works at the building and serve a key purpose in unlocking a provisional £1.8 million award from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, subject to additional match funding being secured.

The project intends to restore and improve the community-owned kirk.

Repairs to the historic building, enhanced accessibility, new public toilets and energy efficiency upgrades are among the planned works.

The Auld Kirk will be able to host a variety of community activities, such as events, meetings, ceremonies and concerts, once it reaches completion.

It will also provide facilities for both residents and visitors of the town.

Councillor Jonny Tepp, convener of the North East Fife Area Committee, said: “The Auld Kirk is an important part of the village’s history and identity, and this investment will help preserve the building while creating a valuable community space for local people.”

“By approving this funding, we’re helping to unlock significant external investment that will benefit the area for many years to come.”

Tepp added: “The project will create a more accessible and sustainable building that can support community events, activities and visitors, ensuring the Auld Kirk remains at the heart of village life.”

Overall, the project is valued at £2.44m, with funding having been secured from both the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic Environment Scotland.

St Monans Common Good Fund’s contribution will help bring the project a step closer to delivery.
