Funding opportunity made available to owners of historic buildings in Tarbert

Owners of historic buildings in Tarbert have been encouraged to apply for grant funding to support the repair and restoration of buildings in the village’s designated heritage area.

The Tarbert Heritage Scheme, which is a £3.2 million partnership project funded by Historic Environment Scotland, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Argyll and Bute Council and participating property owners, is providing support for eligible repair works to historic buildings within the scheme’s grant area.

Funding is available for:

  • Fabric repairs, including the reinstatement or refurbishment of traditional wooden sash and case windows, and repairs to roofs, chimneys and rainwater goods.
  • Shopfront improvements, such as full replacement shopfronts, repairs, reinstatement of lost architectural features, redecoration and new signage.
  • The funding is part of a wider programme targeted at preserving and boosting the historic environment of Tarbert.

As well as grants for building repairs, the scheme includes the repair and reuse of historic buildings, comprehensive repairs to priority tenement properties, shopfront improvement grants, smaller building repair projects that prioritise the area’s fishing heritage, and intentions to bring vacant homes and commercial premises back into productive use.

The programme also includes a variety of community heritage activities, skills training and educational initiatives that celebrate Tarbert’s maritime heritage while supporting the development of traditional building skills, supporting local contractors and providing opportunities for young people.

Councillor Jim Lynch, policy lead for economic development, housing, communities and islands, said: “The Tarbert Heritage Scheme is about much more than repairing buildings.

“It is an investment in the village’s future, helping to protect its unique heritage, support local businesses and contractors, provide opportunities for young people and bring

historic buildings back into use.”

Lynch added: “We would encourage eligible property owners to find out more about the funding available and consider applying.”

Property owners who would like to apply for funding are invited to submit an expression of interest by 13 November 2026.

Completing the relevant expression of interest form before the deadline is the first step in the process.
