George Square project reaches new milestone with reopening of the north carriageway
A milestone in the work to transform George Square will be marked on 26 June with the completion of work to create a striking new footway and carriageway on the north side of Square.
This work saw the installation of new granite setts on the footway and carriageway there, and this will be complete by 5pm on Friday, 26 June.
After this, vehicles will be able to travel from West George Street and from North Hanover Street along the new carriageway and on to George Street, with permitted vehicles (buses, taxis and other authorised vehicles) able to travel northwards on North Hanover Street. Private cars will be able to travel - as before - to and along the new carriageway between 7pm - 7am and vehicular access to the lower end of North Frederick Street will begin in late July, once work is complete on the junction there.
Councillor Angus Millar, convener for city centre recovery at Glasgow City Council, said: “The reopening of the road along the north of George Square is another key milestone in the wall to wall transformation of Glasgow’s greatest civic space.
“With the high-quality stonework extending across the roads and pavements, everyone is already getting a real sense of how fantastic our new Square is shaping up to be.
“And in recent weeks, we’ve completed the Cowcaddens Road Avenue - which is already bringing new greenery and a real sense of place to the north side of the city centre. There’s has undoubtedly been major roadworks in the city centre in recent months, but we’re now beginning to see the transformation we’ve been working to deliver and which will serve our city well in the decades ahead.”
Elsewhere in the Square itself, work on the south carriageway is now well underway, with the works on the eastern and western footways complete for some time. The next phase of the restoration of Sir Walter Scott Monument has begun with the upper half completed and work on the bottom half begun.
Across the city centre, the Cowcaddens Road & Dobbie’s Loan Avenues Plus project completed in May, with the South Portland Street Avenues Plus scheme expected to finish next month. Work on the Argyle Street East Avenue began earlier this week, and final work on the substantially complete Argyle Street West Avenue will be finalised once Scottish Water emergency works are completed at the Hielanman’s Umbrella and the block going west from there.
Cathedral Street will also soon reopen after the completion of Scottish Water emergency works and subsequent road resurfacing.
The George Square project is part of the wider £123million Avenues programme, which is funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal, with the funding provided by the Scottish and UK Governments.
