Geothermal energy study completed at Balmoral Estate

The first phase of a pre-feasibility study evaluating geothermal opportunities at the Balmoral Estate in Aberdeenshire has been completed.

Initiated by ZeGen Energy, the full project is co-funded by the Balmoral Estate and the Net Zero Technology Centre and seeks to evaluate the geothermal potential and benefits to the estate.

This first phase of the study has been carried out in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen and support from Ross DK. It provides conceptual heat potential and uses while scoping preliminary well designs along with drilling and surface scenarios.

The second phase of the study will seek to further understand the risks and opportunity for the project and frame a comprehensive development strategy that could see Balmoral adopt geothermal as part of their renewable energy mix.

“We are delighted to be involved in this exciting project which underlines the shift towards recognising geothermal energy as part of the blended energy solution for Scotland and the UK. Bringing geothermal energy to the region is something to be excited about,” said Kirsten Pasturel, CEO of ZeGen Energy.
